Stars and Stripes Acrylic Pen Blanks
How to Turn Acrylics
Comments On Feb 07, 2019:AHHHH! My former supplier quit carrying the SQUARE red white stripe blanks. The round blanks they began carrying were crap. They either split apart on the drill press or when turning. I have never had a problem with acrylic blanks because I KNOW WHAT i AM DOING. Thank you WOOD TUNERS. You just got a new customer.
Additional Comments On Feb 07, 2019:Here I am again. I use the stars with red white stripes for military veterans that I mostly give to vets as a thank you for their service. I spend about as much time sharpening the 1/2" skew as I do turning. No pressure on the blank. Plus I band saw the 90-degree edges about 1/8th. This way the edges are not as sharp and reduces turning time by 50%. I turn them until the blank is barely round - makes a fat pen. If anyone has problems with the blanks, try the above. I do not make slimline pens with the stars and stripes.

Comments On Dec 20, 2018:I bought four of the wave stripes and four stars blanks. The stars turned and finished very nice yet half of the wavy blanks blew apart or chipped out not sure why, might have been me but I was very careful with them. Seems as though some of the waves were very brittle. I would not buy the wave stripes again, might try the straight stripes.
Additional Comments On Jan 16, 2019:I bought a couple acrylic stars and a couple stripes blanks. The stars turned ok however the stripes chipped out. After talking with Roger at CS he advised me to max the speed and turn a lighter cut. Roger sent me 2 new blanks to try at the higher speed and lighter cut, will let you know but I appreciate Roger from Craft Supplies for taking the time to give me a little advice and the new blanks. Thanks Roger.

Comments On Sep 14, 2015:Found this acrylic at the store in utah and picked up one blank of stars and one wavy stripes. Used a cigar pen kit for effect and was not dissappointed. The black components of the kit and the colors of the acrylic blanks worked well together. The dark blue stars blank is a bit transluscent so I used a white barrel to lighten it up just a bit. A brass barrel would be very visible on some of the thinner walled pens.
The acrylic turned well with few issues. Did turn it at a slightly slower speed than I usually turn wood blanks.
Polished up well with a nice smooth surface.

Comments On Aug 07, 2015:I just finished two Apprentice Fancy Slimline pens (using just one of each of the stars and wavy stripes) blanks. Stars on top; stripes on the bottom.
I painted the inside of the blanks with white spray primer, and the brass tubes did not show, and the colors were quite vivid.
I was a bit concerned that the stars might not show with the blank being turned down to such a small diameter. However there was nothing that said it wouldn't work on the website, so I plunged ahead. I called Tech Support, and he cautioned me that they are a bit more prone to chipping than other acrylics, so I turned them with appropriate caution, and sharp tools (round-nose scraper and a skew).
The turning went well, and as I feared some of the stars didn't make the cut, but only a few and they were in line. (That's why there are clips on the pens, right?)
All in all, I was very pleased. Just be advised that a thicker wall will allow more of the stars to come out, even in the daytime.

Comments On Jul 10, 2014:I made several of these pens for the 4th of July. The end result was some very nice patriotic pens. In my opinion they would make an excellent choice for anyone participating in the Freedom Pens Project. I probably should have painted the inside of the stars blank because the tube does show through slightly if you hold it up to the light. It's not really that noticeable in most circumstances though.
I made pens with both the wavy stripes and the straight stripes. I preferred the way the wavy stripes looked on the finished project. Plus, I had one of the straight stripes inexplicably explode on me while turning it. It's always possible that was my fault.

Comments On Jun 25, 2014:I have used all 3 and will never go back to the 500 wood pieces type again. Colors are very bright and polish up very bright. When you use them knock off the corners, this will help prevent chipping. Try them you will like the results.
