Types of Pen Blanks

Hardwood Pen Blanks
Hardwood pen turning blanks come from deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves). This includes exotic woods from around the world, like Rosewood, Ebony, Cocobolo, and unique burls. Common woods grown domestically, such as Cherry, Walnut, and all kinds of Maple, also make beautiful pen blanks.

Acrylic Pen Blanks
Top pen makers around the world use acrylic pen blanks for their best pens. Why? Because acrylic comes in a huge range of brilliant colors, unique patterns, and even sparkly designs like glitter and swirls that are often found in high-end collector pens. Working with acrylic is often easier to turn and finish than many hardwoods and stabilized blanks. While acrylic doesn’t look like wood, that’s often the look people want for an eye-catching pen.

Stabilized Pen Blanks
Stabilized pen blanks work like acrylics or plastics when turning and finishing. Stabilization doesn’t change the color and figure of the wood blank but does make the wood stronger, impervious to wood movement, and resistant to water, oils, and solvents. Stabilized pen blanks turn easily and can be polished to achieve a glass-like finish. Many woods that offer unique patterns and figure, like spalting, cannot be worked due to soft areas, typically due to decay, thus the need for stabilization.

DiamondCast Pen Blanks
Diamondcast pen blanks offer a touch of extraordinary sparkle and depth to both kit pens and custom kitless projects. Created through a vertical casting process, each blank comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, guaranteeing its unique nature and the inclusion of real diamond dust. Diamondcast pen blanks provide an excellent alternative if you’re looking for a visual texture different from flat-cast blanks. Ideal for any pen up to a Jr. Gentleman’s size pen.

Flower Girl Pen Blanks
Flower Girl pen blanks by Kayla Cooper are made with real, dried flowers carefully cast in clear resin that’s guaranteed not to yellow. These blanks offer a one-of-a-kind look, full of beautiful colors and natural textures that will give your custom pens a “wow” effect you won’t find anywhere else.

Tru-Stone Pen Blanks
Tru-Stone blanks are made with pulverized semi-precious stone and natural colors, bound together by resin. The resulting patterns and colors beautifully echo the natural beauty of real stone, giving your pens a distinctive and sophisticated look. Because Tru-Stone blanks are made in part using real stone, they are very hard and require patience when drilling, turning, and finishing. The exceptional look and feel of pens made of Tru-Stone make the extra effort worthwhile.

FAQs

A pen blank is a small, prepared piece of material, typically wood or acrylic, that is specifically sized and intended for turning into a finished pen. Pen blanks are used to make both single-piece and two-piece pens on the wood lathe. Pen blanks are available in many materials, including wood, acrylic, and synthetic stone.

Although many pen finishes can produce a beautiful high-gloss finish, durability varies greatly. Generally speaking, hand-applied lacquers, waxes, and friction polishes are quick and easy to apply, but don’t produce a finish that can last for years.

Our preferred method of finishing pens and similar small projects is with Cyanoacrylate glue (also known as CA or Super Glue). Applied correctly, a CA glue finish can be polished to a mirror-like finish and is the longest-lasting, most durable pen finish.  Although finishing pens using CA glue takes a bit more time and patience, the result is a finish you can count on to last for years to come. Watch our video Getting the Perfect CA Finish for step-by-step instructions on applying a CA finish to your pen blanks.

We recommend carbide turning tools for turning acrylic blanks. These tools are less aggressive, easier to control, and leave a better surface finish than when using traditional turning tools.

We recommend drilling pen blanks on your wood lathe. It's a tool you already have and it does a very precise and controlled job of drilling pen blanks. Secure the blank in a self-centering chuck using a set of pen drilling jaws. Use the tailstock with a key chuck to hold and advance the drill bit. This method ensures accuracy across wood, acrylic, resin, and other materials.
