Experienced woodturners know that a great edge starts before the tool ever touches the wheel. If your gouge sits a little deeper or shallower in the jig than it did last time, your bevel changes with it, no matter how carefully the rest of your setup is dialed in. The Raptor® Multi-Depth Grinding Jig Guide takes that variable off the table by providing four of the most useful tool protrusion settings, 1-3/4", 2", 2-1/2", and 3" in one compact gauge that sets your tool’s depth with a simple physical stop.

Sharpening a new primary edge, adding a clearance bevel, or setting up a 40/40 grind each call for a different depth, and this gauge has a step for every one of them. Seat the tool against the step you need, lock it into your jig, and grind with confidence that today’s setup matches yesterday’s. It’s the same dependable Raptor® depth-setting system as the individual guides, gathered into one piece that frees up room on your grinder bench. It has a bench-hook design that simply hooks onto the edge of a bench for use and can be fixed securely in place using the mounting holes if desired.

Why You Need the Raptor® Multi-Depth Grinding Jig Guide:

  • Four Depths, One Gauge: Every protrusion setting you need is in one jig.
  • Essential Depth Setting: Set the tool to the correct depth in the holder before you begin sharpening.
  • Eliminate “Eyeballing”: Stop relying on rulers or pencil marks on your workbench. A repeatable physical reference delivers the most consistent results.
  • Extend Tool Life: Positioning the tool identically every time means you remove only the metal needed to refresh the edge, so your expensive gouges last longer.
  • Secondary Bevel Capability: Easily create a secondary (clearance) bevel to prevent heel-rubbing and scoring marks on your workpieces.
  • Saves Bench Space: One compact gauge replaces several, so it’s easy to store and quick to grab.

Choosing the Correct Depth:

  • 1-3/4" Step: The standard protrusion setting for turners using 6" diameter grinding wheels.
  • 2" Step: The standard protrusion setting for turners using 8" diameter grinding wheels.
  • 2-1/2" Step: Used on 8" wheels to set the protrusion for grinding a secondary (clearance) bevel. Sharpen the primary edge using the 2" step first, then switch to the 2-1/2" step to grind the clearance bevel.
  • 3" Step: Designed for the 40/40 grind setup on 8" grinding wheels to achieve the required geometry.
