Types of Ring Cores

Today’s turners have a broad selection of ring kits to choose from. If you are new to ring making, this can seem daunting, but let’s simplify things by organizing the choices by the type of ring core style.

  • Comfort Fit Ring Cores: All of our rings feature a radiused interior profile that’s comfortable on your skin and won’t pinch when doing everyday tasks. In fact, it’s so comfortable that you may never take it off!
  • Inlay Ring Cores: Available in a variety of styles and are specifically designed for inlaying exotic decorative materials such as Opal, Crushed Stone, and Metal Inlay for a premium look.
  • 2-Piece Ring Cores: JDG 2 Piece ring cores are a favorite among ring makers who cater to high-end jewelry shops and collectors for their ability to showcase metal and wood or acrylic on the surface. The unique two piece design provides an excellent fit and finish with a nearly invisible joint when assembled.

Getting Started Ring Making

Don’t let the idea of turning your own ring intimidate you, it’s easier than you might think! With the right tools, quality ring making kits,, and our library of ring making videos you’ll be making high quality rings in no time. To help you get your start in ring making, here’s a few of our step-by-step blog posts to get you started:

  • Turning an Artisan Comfort Ring Core: In this article we cover ring turning 101, and our preferred method for finishing turned rings.
  • Ring Turning with the Ring Boring Head: This article shows you how to turn a ring using the Boring Head, which greatly simplifies the precise fitting of the ring core to the ring blank.
  • Making a Wood Inlay Ring: We cover how to turn an inlay ring core from a solid blank and show you all the tips and tricks to be successful.
  • Turning a JDG 2 Piece Ring: This ring core features a nice contrast of metal band and wood but has its own unique challenges. Learn how to turn a 2 piece ring core and take your ring making to the next level.

For the beginner making your first ring, we suggest turning a standard comfort fit ring core and a hardwood ring blank. The design of the comfort ring core is easy to shape, and a hardwood ring blank is easy to turn, sand, and finish. Turn a handful of rings like this to build your ring making skills, then progress to other turning materials like acrylic ring blanks or stabilized ring blanks. Experiment with new techniques like decorative inlays and applying a CA finish (cyanoacrylate) for an eye catching and extremely durable ring finish.

FAQs

All of our cores have what’s known as a “Comfort Fit”.  Comfort Fit rings feature a dome-like shape along the interior of the ring, making them much more comfortable to wear for long periods of time and won't pinch when doing everyday tasks.

Our favorite finish for rings is a CA Finish because it’s very durable, high gloss, and nothing shows off your blank better. See our full article on Applying a CA Finish to learn how to apply it to your turning projects.

The Ring Boring Head is an affordable solution that makes fitting the ring blank to the core fast and easy. You simply mount the ring boring head in your tailstock and use the included carbide cutter to bore out your ring blank to the perfect size for your core. See our blog post, Ring Turing with the Artisan Ring Boring Head, to learn the full process.

Fortunately, ceramic ring cores are extremely scratch resistant and are tougher than the tungsten carbide cutters so they won't scratch while turning. We've only been able to scratch our ceramic ring cores with either CBN or Diamond.
