Cleaning and Preventing Rust on Your Lathe
If you turn wood, rust is an inevitable enemy. Wet green wood dumps massive amounts of moisture directly onto your lathe, while high-tannin species like oak and walnut carry acids that aggressively attack raw metal.
Left unchecked, light surface rust quickly turns into pitted metal. Pitting ruins the smooth slide of your banjo and tailstock, forcing you into heavy sanding that can permanently wallow out your bedways.
Here is a straightforward, step-by-step process to strip surface rust, clean your components, and apply long-lasting protection—without ruining your lathe’s factory finish.
Step 1: Remove Surface Rust (Without Sandpaper)
Never reach for standard sandpaper to clean light bedway rust. Sandpaper is far too aggressive and can create deep scratches or uneven low spots on precision-ground surfaces.
- Apply a lubricant: Spray a small amount of WD-40 or 3-in-1 oil directly onto the rusted areas. The lubricant breaks up old waxes and helps the abrasive float away rust particles.

- Use non-woven abrasives: Grab a fine non-woven abrasive pad (such as a 1500-grit Mirlon or fine Scotch-Brite pad).

- Scrub strictly in line with the bedways: Work back and forth in straight lines from headstock to tailstock. Avoid circular motions or swirl patterns, which leave visible scratch marks across the metal.
- Deburr any nicks: If you notice your banjo catching on small nicks along the inside chamfer of the bedways, take a small, ultra-fine metal file and lightly knock off the high spots.
Pro Tip: If you have cured CA glue or spray finish stuck to your bedway, don’t scrub it with abrasives. Use a plastic paint scraper to pop the spots right off before applying your lubricant.
Step 2: Clean the Banjo, Quill, and Spindle
Rust doesn’t just form on top of the bedways—it creeps underneath components and into critical mating surfaces.
- Slide your banjo and tailstock to one side (or remove them entirely) to clean the underside rails using the same pad-and-lubricant method.

- Check the mounting hole on your banjo. Wood dust and moisture get trapped inside, rusting the bore and making height adjustments stick.
- Extend your tailstock quill all the way out. Wipe away fine dust buildup, check for surface rust, and inspect the internal Morse taper.
- Surface rust on your spindle shoulder prevents chucks from seating true, causing noticeable runout. With the lathe turned OFF, use a fine non-woven pad and a small brass or nylon brush to clean out the spindle threads and shoulder.
Step 3: Degrease the Bare Metal
Before applying protection, you must completely remove the dirty oil, slurry, and residual WD-40.
Wipe down all surfaces with a clean paper towel. Follow up with a solvent like lacquer thinner, acetone, or a dedicated degreaser to strip the bare metal down to a bone-dry finish.

Step 4: Apply Paste Wax for Long-Term Protection
Never use heavy oils or grease on exposed lathe surfaces or internal lead screws. Oils attract wet wood shavings and fine sanding dust, turning into a gritty paste that binds up moving parts.
- Apply a liberal coat of clear paste wax (such as Mylan’s Clear Paste Wax or Johnson’s Paste Wax) to all bare metal surfaces—including the quill, bedways, spindle shoulder, and banjo undersides. Keep wax off painted surfaces, as the solvents in the wax can soften some paints.

- Allow the solvent in the wax to evaporate for a few minutes until it haze over white.
- Buff the surfaces thoroughly with a clean rag. The wax fills micro-pores in the metal, leaving a dry, slick barrier that repels moisture and prevents wood sap from sticking.
How Often Should You Maintain Your Lathe?
- Dry Wood Turning: Every 2 to 3 months (or quarterly).
- Wet/Green Wood Turning: Right after finishing a heavy batch of wet blanks or coring out bowls.
- High-Tannin Woods (Oak/Walnut): Apply a quick top-coat of paste wax before you start your turning session.
Taking ten minutes to dress your bedways keeps your machine sliding smoothly and protects your investment for years to come.
