The Apprentice Dead Center features a 60 degree work point that's ideal for turning mandrel projects between centers without the need for a mandrel provided your project uses stepped bushings. By eliminating the mandrel, the bushings are able to run true to axis of the lathe centers so the barrel ends are perfectly square for a better fit.
For finishing projects with a CA finish, remove the bushings and mount the barrel directly between centers. This eliminates the hassle of trying to remove glued-on bushings from the project without damaging the finish.
The Apprentice Dead Center is also a great way for beginner woodturners to drive material between centers safely and efficiently. In the event of a tool catch, the friction drive center allows the stock to stop spinning until the tool is removed.
